A security guard was shot at the GREATER Edendale Mall on Saturday, following a wrestle with a suspected mugger.
The guard, 51-year-old Sipho Phungula who has been employed at GEM for about three years, said he was lucky to have narrowly escaped death.

Phungula said it all started when two men who robbed a lady that works at Pick n Pay last week were recognised by their victim at the mall on Saturday and she alerted security.
He said the two suspects were then handcuffed and taken to the control room where they are usually kept until the police arrive.

The guard said he was later alerted by one of the guys doing an activation inside the mall that the suspect had release himself from the handcuffs, but said when he went to check on the suspect, he looked like he was still cuffed.
However, as the guard turned around to leave the room, the suspect attacked him from behind, disarmed and shot him on the left side of his chest before he fled.

Head of security at GEM Gerald Mchunu, said they were offering a cash reward to anyone that may assist with information to help recover the stolen firearm.

Plessislaer Police spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela confirmed that a case of attempted murder and robbery of firearm has been opened against the alleged assailant.
