A relief for Public Works inspectors in fear of being axed

Inspectors from the KZN Department of Public Works involved in a pay dispute with their bosses, fear that they may be fired in  the reformation of the department later this month.

Some of the inspectors employed by the department said they have been engaging with legal counsel and the Bargaining Council since 2009.

This comes after the department had failed to administer the works inspector salary code, which means that the inspectors were being paid the same as ordinary administration staff.

The inspectors said the department does not acknowledge the grievance procedure, as seen through the history of unsettled complaints.

Media liaison officer for Ravi Naidoo, who is the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Mbulelo Baloyi confirmed that a structural review would take place at the Department of Public Works this month but said there would be no retrenchments.

Baloyi said the review was necessary due to changed legislative requirements on infrastructure delivery from National Treasury.
