Road safety and traffic rules to be added to school curriculum

Reports that the Department of Basic Education plans to incorporate road safety including relevant traffic rules and regulations as an essential part of schools’ curriculum design is a welcome step.

The Democratic Alliance had voiced it in the past years that the orientation of young minds towards respecting and understanding the rules of the road is critical in reducing the high number of fatalities on the roads.

The issue of pedestrian deaths is particularly relevant in this case.
The carnage on the roads show some level of disregard for traffic rules by road users, while the move to educate pupils on the dangers of drunk driving, speeding and unroad-worthy vehicles is a positive step.

This comes after a recent World Health Organisation Report identified road crashes to be the main cause for deaths among the SA youth population, suggesting that the future of the country is at stake.
