Driver averts death

A NORTHDALE resident was home alone when a car ploughed through her fence and dashed into her yard
yesterday morning.
Chanu Jandruballi, who stays at the corner of Newholmes Way and Bombay Road said she heard a big bang at around 8 am.
Jandruballi said she got such a shock and panicked before rushing outside to see what had happened.
When she got outside, Jandruballi said her brick fencing was down and a car was resting against the wall of her house.

She said the driver was already standing next to the car together with a young girl wearing her school uniform and that the man was very apologetic and offered to repair the damage.
The woman said the still-shocked driver told her his brakes failed when he had reached a red robot on a downhill slope.
He said he swerved because he was trying to avoid a car in front of him.
Jandruballi said she was glad that no one was walking past her house at the time because that would have been tragic as people especially children, usually walk around her place.

Looking at the scene, it was clear that the quick-thinking driver had opted for the least damaging way to stop his car.

Jandruballi said a traffic official arrived at her house an hour later to take a statement.
