Motorists have been urged to take precautionary measures on the roads ahead of the predicted continuous rainfall this week.
With more than 12 accident scenes attended to by paramedics around Pietermaritzburg on Monday, the emergency services said the rain may have been the cause of many of the accidents.
Andrew Rogers of ER24 said most of the accidents were not serious and that patients involved in those accidents escaped with minor injuries, while others sustained serious but not critical injuries.
Rogers said with more rainfall still expected in the next couple of days, they urge motorists to be extra vigilant on the roads.
He said motorists can contribute to safer roads by following driving guidelines like keeping a reasonable following distance and keeping their headlights.

Rogers said leaving home early can help by not rushing and driving and added that one should rather be late for an appointment than causing an accident.
