PARAMEDICS from KwaZuluNatal’s Emergency Medical Services described their fear when they were attacked in the Slangspruit area in Pietermaritzburg during the weekend.
No one knows what became of the pregnant woman who had called for help as the paramedics did not reach their destination.
The woman is reported to have called for an ambulance again after the attack to say she was still at the scene and needed assistance.

The paramedics, who asked not to be named, said they could not continue working after they were attacked while responding to a maternity call in Slangspruit on Saturday night at around 11 pm.

A female paramedic from the team said after trying to open a case at the Alexandra road police station, they were told that there was no evidence showing that the man were trying to hijack them.
Another paramedic who was present on Saturday, said responding to operations in Slangspruit in the future would not be easy.

He said there should be an arrangement with the community because although they cannot compromise their safety as paramedics, the community needed the ambulance.
