Businesses serving Rainbow workers suffer

The owner of a Hammarsdale supermarket is concerned after spending several million rands on extending and upgrading his Hammarsdale Hyper store.
The supermarket is right next to the main Rainbow Chickens P2 processing plant.
The concern comes after RCL Foods, under Rainbow chickens, cut down their man power by more than 1000 people last month.
The supermarket owner said the retrenchment of the workers has had a very negative effect on his business, and that it was widely evident.
Kadodia said just a few days after the retrenchment, the supermarket with its brand new ovens and shelving was quiet.
He said he has also had to send half his staff home because there were no customers for them to serve.
Kadodia, who has been serving Rainbow workers for 20 years, said the situation is already having a huge impact on business.

RCL managing director Scott Pitman said the retrenchments and farm sales have only bought the company time, and that more lay-offs may follow.
